The lights inside the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre glittered brightly. Cameras flashed endlessly. Thousands watched in anticipation.
But by the end of the night, one name stood above every conversation, every performance and every award. Black Sherif.
At the 27th edition of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards, the rapper-singer-songwriter delivered one of the biggest victories of his career, reclaiming the prestigious Artiste of the Year crown and reminding Ghana’s music industry why he remains one of the most influential voices of his generation.
For Blacko, this was more than just another award. It was legacy.
At just 24 years old, Black Sherif has now won the biggest award in Ghanaian music twice, a remarkable feat many artistes spend an entire career chasing.
Even more impressive, when he first captured the Artiste of the Year crown in 2023, he was only 21 years old.
Three years later, he has returned stronger, sharper and more dominant, proving that his first victory was not a fluke but the beginning of an era.
The numbers behind Blacko’s big night
Going into the awards, Black Sherif secured nominations across several major categories, proving his dominance throughout the year.
He earned nominations for:
- Artiste of the Year
- Album/EP of the Year
- Hiphop Song of the Year
- Songwriter of the Year
- Afropop Song of the Year
- Hiplife/Hiphop Artiste of the Year
- International Collaboration of the Year
- Music Video of the Year
- Most Popular Song of the Year
Out of those nine nominations, Black Sherif walked away with four major awards, making him one of the biggest winners of the night.
Blacko’s 2026 TGMA wins
- Artiste of the Year
- Album/EP of the Year — Iron Boy
- Hiphop Song of the Year — Where Dem Boys
- Songwriter of the Year — Sacrifice
Four wins. One unforgettable night.
Why this win matters
Black Sherif’s latest victory means he has now won the Artiste of the Year award twice.
His first came in 2023. Now, with another dominant run in 2026, he officially joins an elite league of Ghanaian music greats who have managed to win the category more than once.
Artistes to win TGMA Artiste of the Year twice
- VIP/VVIP — 2004 & 2011
- Sarkodie — 2010 & 2012
- Stonebwoy — 2015 & 2024
- Black Sherif — 2023 & 2026
That achievement alone places Black Sherif among the modern legends of Ghanaian music. Even more remarkable? At age 24, Black Sherif has already achieved what many legendary artistes spent decades building.
And in the 27-year history of the awards, no artiste has ever won the Artiste of the Year title three times.
Blacko is now just one win away from becoming the first.
The ‘Iron Boy’ era
At the centre of Black Sherif’s campaign was his critically acclaimed project, Iron Boy.
The project became one of the most talked-about Ghanaian albums of the year, producing emotionally rich records, chart-topping songs and deeply relatable storytelling.
The album defeated projects from: Stonebwoy, Gyakie, Medikal, Wendy Shay and Kweku Smoke, to win Album/EP of the Year.
For many fans, Iron Boy was not just an album. It became the soundtrack to pain, survival, ambition and hope.
‘Sacrifice’ became the heart of his campaign
If Iron Boy represented the body of work, then Sacrifice became the soul of Black Sherif’s TGMA run. The song earned nominations in:
- Songwriter of the Year
- Afropop Song of the Year
- Most Popular Song of the Year
- Music Video of the Year
And eventually won: Songwriter of the Year and Afropop Song of the Year.
The success of Sacrifice highlighted Black Sherif’s greatest strength, storytelling.
His ability to transform pain, struggle and reflection into music that connects deeply with listeners continues to separate him from many of his peers.
The categories he lost
Despite dominating the night, Black Sherif did not sweep every category.
He lost:
- Hiplife/Hiphop Artiste of the Year to Medikal
- International Collaboration of the Year to Moliy’s Shake It To The Max Remix
- Music Video of the Year to AratheJay
- Most Popular Song of the Year to Shoulder by Medikal featuring Shatta Wale and Beeztrap KOTM
But even in defeat, Black Sherif remained the defining face of the awards night.
Why Black Sherif’s win is a big deal
This victory represents more than trophies. It confirms Black Sherif’s transformation from a breakout star into a generational force in African music.
Over the years, Blacko has evolved from the young voice behind street anthems into a globally recognised artiste capable of blending drill, highlife, Afrobeats and deeply personal storytelling into one unique sound.
His journey from Konongo-Zongo to becoming a two-time Artiste of the Year winner continues to inspire young dreamers across Ghana and beyond.
And perhaps the most powerful part of his story is this; at 21, he shocked the industry by winning Ghana music’s biggest award.
At 24, he returned to prove that greatness was never temporary. Black Sherif is no longer simply the future of Ghanaian music. He is already one of its defining stars.
