Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has said he anticipated that the NDC would face challenges implementing the anti-LGBTQ bill once it assumed power.

According to him, the NDC while in opposition had no interest in signing the bill into law but used it as a political weapon against the previous Akufo-Addo administration.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with TV3, Tuesday, May 12, 2026, he explained that the current difficulty in assenting to the bill vindicates his stance, noting that the NDC is “struggling” with passing the bill.

“This whole LGBTQ thing, I think our friends in opposition were more interested in winning elections by blackmailing the Akufo-Addo government with this LGBTQ thing.

“I knew that the NDC itself upon coming into power would have difficulty in signing the bill and I have been proven right and they are still struggling,” he stated.

The Effutu MP accused the governing National Democratic Congress of retreating from its earlier support for the anti-LGBTQ bill after assuming office.

Afenyo-Markin argued that the same bill the NDC strongly supported and helped pass in Parliament is now facing hesitation from the party in government.

“The very law in its form and shape that in opposition they wanted passed and in fact they got it passed, today, they wouldn’t want the same law, the text to be signed into law,” he remarked.

He further claimed that the NDC appears to be backing away from its earlier position on the matter.

“I think they are beating a retreat if they have already not beaten a retreat. They were more about blackmailing NPP and winning power; they were not serious about this LGBTQ issue,” he added.

The Minority Leader challenged the government to prove its commitment to the legislation by passing the same version of the bill previously approved by Parliament.

“If they want to prove me wrong, the perhaps they should pass the same law that they pushed through Parliament,” he concluded.
