The Berekum Divisional Police have taken action against illegal mining activities by arresting eight suspects in the Amomaso Forest area, near the Berekum municipality in the Bono region.
The arrests occurred on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, around 4:00 p.m., following a distress call about individuals engaging in illegal mining. Upon arrival, the Berekum District Patrol team found local residents who had apprehended the suspects.
Authorities seized several items from the suspects, including a pick axe, four shovels, a water pumping machine, and a woolen carpet reportedly used for washing gold.
The suspects were handed over to the police, detained for further investigation, and the seized items were kept as evidence.
The individuals arrested include: Nathaniel Atule, 23, Cletus Azusiwine, 22, Thomas Ayaama, 15, Joseph Asigiya, 23, Aboyinga Aselise, 37,Raymond Atanbire, 20, Isaac Ntim, 46 and Isaac Aguya, 25.
Authorities are currently preparing the suspects for prosecution. The Bono Regional Police Command has praised the community for their vigilant cooperation and encourages continued reporting of illegal mining activities.
