German broadcaster, Deutsche Welle (DW) is reporting that high school students in South Africa, on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, demonstrated on the streets of Kraaifontein, near Cape Town, demanding the removal of foreign nationals from their schools and the country. 

The report says police have since launched investigations into the protest which turned violent.

According to a social media post made by the German state-funded media, about 700 high school students partook in the demonstration which reportedly got a foreign national assaulted.

It is also reported that vehicles were stoned, with roadside stalls looted in the process.

DW reported further that “security officers were deployed to restore calm and escort students back to school.”

The Western Cape Education Department said the disruption appeared to have started at one school before spreading to others within the area.

South Africans have attacked several Africans in the country including Ghanaians and Nigerians, with the Government of Ghana evacuating its people from the country.

Some Ghanaians in South Africa who want to be evacuated have registered with the Ghana High Commission, with the first batch of almost 300 people arriving in the capital on Thursday, May 28, 2026.
