The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has disclosed that 85 Ghanaians have been evacuated from Cambodia between March and May this year.
The evacuation was dine with the assistance of Ghana’s High Commission in Malaysia, which is accredited to Cambodia.
He said these individuals were evacuated upon expressing their desire to voluntarily return home.
He added that 76 more Ghanaians are being evacuated to complete the exercise.
His revelation comes amid false reports that Cambodian immigration authorities ordering African nationals, including Ghanaians, to leave Cambodia
In a press release issued on May 29, the Foreign Affairs Ministry said it had engaged the relevant Cambodian authorities and confirmed that the document circulating on social and traditional media platforms was not authentic.
According to the statement, the fake notice falsely claimed that citizens of Ghana, Kenya, Cameroon, Uganda and other African countries had been directed to leave Cambodia or risk arrest, imprisonment and financial penalties over immigration violations.
The Ministry explained that Cambodia’s General Department of Immigration under the Ministry of Interior had officially clarified that the notice was “completely untrue” and was not issued by any state institution in the Southeast Asian country.
“The Ministry wishes to assure the public that following diplomatic engagements with the relevant Cambodian authorities, it has been confirmed that the said notice is absolutely fake,” the statement noted.
