Member of Parliament for Okaikwei Central, Patrick Yaw Boamah has called for the Minister for Works and Housing to be summoned before Parliament over the persistent flooding on the Accra-Cape Coast highway anytime it rains.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament, Friday, May 29, 2026, he laments that the flooding frequently leaves commuters stranded and unable to use the stretch, and further appealed to the Finance Ministry to release funds to contractors working on the Accra Cape-Coast road project to help address the recurring problem.
“If you look at pictures and videos from the Western part of Accra especially where Honourable Ayariga drives through to Winneba and Cape Cast, the whole area was submerged yesterday.
“And it will be very important for us to hear from the Works and Housing Minister on steps that government is taking to get the drainage system, to address their plight,” he stated.
Responding to the concerns, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga attributed the persistent flooding to the failure of successive governments to strictly enforce urban planning regulations and building codes in cities.
“I know that it is not just about the Minister of Finance disbursing funds, it is also the failure over many years to enforce all the codes that this Parliament has passed relating to how we plan our cities, where we develop and don’t develop, how we make sure the water ways are protected so that when we have heavy downpours, there won’t be obstruction to waterways for flooding,” he noted.
