Former Black Stars coach and current head coach of Gor Mahia CK Akonnor believes Ghana have what it takes to make a significant impact at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but insists that a strong start will be crucial to the team’s success.
Speaking in an interview with Akoma FM, CK Akonnor stressed the importance of Ghana’s opening group match, describing it as a key factor in determining how far the Black Stars can go in the tournament.
According to the former Ghana coach, winning the first game would provide the confidence and momentum needed for the team to grow stronger as the competition progresses.
“Ghana winning the World Cup is possible, but the most important thing is for us to win our first game,” Akonnor said.
“Our first match is very important for a strong start, and the goal is to win it. Once we do that, knowing Ghana, we will build momentum and improve from there. But it is crucial we start well because after that, we will see things flying high.”
Akonnor also expressed strong confidence in the current Black Stars squad, emphasizing that his belief in the team is the reason he continues to support them.
“I have a lot of belief in this team, which is why I’m supporting them. I know they can achieve something special,” he added.
The former Black Stars captain further pointed to Ghana’s growing experience on football’s biggest stage, noting that the 2026 tournament marks the country’s fifth World Cup appearance.
“Ghana has come a long way. This will be our fifth World Cup appearance. By now, we should be confident in what we are doing, regardless of the opponent we face,” Akonnor stated.
The Black Stars will be hoping to make history at the tournament as they seek to surpass their quarter-final finish at the 2010 FIFA World Cup and establish themselves among the world’s elite football nations.
