The Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Richard Ofori-Agyeman Boadi, has expressed concern about the blatant disregard for environmental sanitation bye laws among traders plying their businesses at the Central Business District and the residents.
According to him, the negative attitude of the residents especially the haphazard dumping of refuse, is affecting the Assembly’s quest to restore the Metropolis to its former status as the Garden City of West Africa.
Speaking on Ghanakoma morning show on Akoma 87.9 FM in Kumasi with Sir John, on Monday, June 15, 2026, he disclosed that first approach to fight sanitation is mindset.
Kumasi has experienced flooding in Asafo Markets and few places during heavy rains on Sunday evening.
Experts blamed the flooding on choked drains and indiscriminate dumping around the Markets and other places.
It came to light that traders had turned the Central Business District and some markets drainage system into a waste disposal site, a practice leading to choke gutters with its attendant environmental and health implications.
During the last clean up exercise, Kumasi Petty Traders union, had a hectic time dealing with stench that emanated from the chocked gutters and stagnant liquid waste.
Mr Boadi underscored the need for continued clean up exercise to restore Kumasi to its former status as the Garden City of West Africa.
He advised that byproducts such as sawdust and others should not be thrown into the drainage system and other unauthorized places.
“The Assembly would deal ruthlessly with any trader or resident caught throwing waste into drains because such unhealthy practices posed serious environmental challenges,” he cautioned.
He said residents were expected to adhere to the environmental sanitation byelaws pertaining to their activities.
He noted that residents and traders should not engage in practice that had the tendency to cause flooding and communicable diseases.
