Two people believed to be sisters have died and a couple sustained injuries after a single-room building collapsed at Gyagyaano, behind Yogurt Fie on Idan Fourth Alley in Cape Coast, Central region, following a downpour in the early hours of Sunday, June 21, 2026.
In a press statement, the Ghana National Fire Service says it received a distress call at 4:54 a.m. and fire crews from the Cape Coast Metro and Regional Headquarters Sub-Stations arrived at the scene at 5:06 a.m.
Rescue crews immediately commenced operations and successfully extricated all four occupants trapped beneath the rubble by 6:19 a.m.
The injured, comprising one male and three females, were transported by the National Ambulance Service to Ewim Polyclinic for treatment.
The statement disclosed that two of the victims, 12-year-old Anastasia Abakah, and 40-year-old Adwoa Baduwa, believed to be sisters, died while receiving treatment at the hospital.
Preliminary investigations by the Ghana National Fire Service says the collapse was caused by heavy rainfall, which compromised the structural integrity of the building.
It further advised “residents of the Cape Coast Metropolis occupying old mud structures or buildings showing signs of structural weakness to have them assessed by qualified experts.”
The Service additionally admonished residents occupying structures deemed unsafe to evacuate, especially in this rainy season to avoid further collapses and deaths.
Meanwhile, a 20-month-old toddler had been killed by mudslide resulting from the heavy rains at Tantri, a suburb of Cape Coast on Friday, June 19.
