The Ghana Irrigation Development Authority (GIDA), in partnership with a private real estate developer, has announced plans to redevelop the Amrahia Dam in the Adenta Municipality into a modern multi-purpose facility to boost agriculture, promote aquaculture and provide recreational opportunities for residents.

The project is aimed at preserving the dam, enhancing its capacity and unlocking its economic and environmental potential as r apid urban development continues to put pressure on the area.

The Amrahia Dam, which is fed by water from the Aburi Mountains, has for decades served as a critical source of irrigation for vegetable farmers while also supplying water to surrounding communities.

However, increasing encroachment by private developers has raised concerns about the long-term sustainability of the water body.

Speaking after inspecting the site, GIDA’s Deputy Director in charge of Stream Oversight, Joseph Nartey, said the redevelopment would transform the dam into a modern facility that serves multiple purposes without compromising its primary role in supporting agriculture.

He explained that the upgraded infrastructure would improve irrigation for downstream farming communities while creating opportunities for aquaculture, recreational activities, fishing and other environmentally sustainable ventures.

Mr. Nartey stressed that the authority remains committed to protecting the dam from illegal developments and warned that individuals constructing buildings within the designated buffer zone would be required to stop work and vacate the area where necessary to safeguard the water resource.

He also dismissed reports suggesting that the Jolly Homes estate had been built within the dam itself, describing the claims as inaccurate.

According to GIDA, the redevelopment forms part of broader efforts to protect Ghana’s irrigation infrastructure while maximising its contribution to food production, environmental conservation and local economic development.
