The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, on Tuesday led a high-level government delegation to Bukom to commiserate with families affected by Monday evening’s fatal road crash at Bukom Junction.
The visit, undertaken on the directive of President John Dramani Mahama, forms part of the government’s immediate response to the tragedy, which claimed several lives and left others injured.
Accompanying the Gender Minister were the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Akweley Ocloo; the Member of Parliament for Odododiodoo, Alfred Ashie Nii Kotey; and the Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey.
The delegati on met with bereaved families, survivors and community leaders to convey the condolences of President Mahama and the Government of Ghana. The Minister also wished those receiving treatment speedy recovery.
Addressing the affected families, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey assured them that the government would stand by them throughout the recovery process.
“The pain and grief of this tragedy are deeply felt by all of us. We are here on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama to stand with you, mourn with you, and assure you that government remains committed to supporting every affected family,” she said.
The Minister disclosed that the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection would work closely with relevant state institutions to assess the needs of victims and provide psychosocial and social protection support, particularly for vulnerable groups such as women, children, older persons and persons living with disabilities.
She added that beyond the immediate relief efforts, the Ministry would coordinate with partner agencies to ensure that families in need of counselling, welfare assistance and other forms of support receive the necessary interventions to aid their recovery.
Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Akweley Ocloo also assured residents that the Regional Coordinating Council would continue collaborating with local authorities to support victims and implement measures aimed at preventing similar incidents.
The Member of Parliament for Odododiodoo, Alfred Ashie Nii Kotey, commended the government’s swift response and appealed to residents to cooperate with emergency responders and investigators as they work to establish the exact cause of the crash.
Residents welcomed the government’s visit, expressing appreciation for the show of solidarity and the assurances of continued support during one of the community’s most difficult moments.
The visit follows a tragic road accident at Bukom Junction in the Ga Mashie area on Monday, July 27, where a vehicle reportedly suffered brake failure and crashed into a group of pedestrians.
According to eyewitnesses, the driver lost control after the vehicle’s brakes allegedly failed, causing it to veer off the road and plough into people gathered along the roadside.
While authorities are yet to confirm the official number of casualties, eyewitnesses said several people were killed or seriously injured, including a pregnant woman and a child.
Personnel from the Ghana Police Service, the National Ambulance Service and other emergency responders were quickly deployed to the scene to rescue the injured, recover the deceased and restore order as investigations into the cause of the crash commenced.
The government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that victims and their families receive the care, protection and support needed as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.
