The Black Queens began their campaign in the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) with a 2-0 win over Cape Verde on Wednesday.
Two goals in either half of the game ensured that the 2024 Bronze medallists walked away with the maximum points.
It was an early statement from the Queens as Doris Boaduwaa lobbed the ball past the Cape Verdean goalkeeper in just the 6th minute.
Several efforts made by the Ghanaians to double the lead failed, until nine minutes after the break when defender Eleia Vieira failed to control a ball in the goal area.
She drove the ball into her own net to put her side 2-0 down, marking a losing debut by the women’s national team.
Cameroon and Mali are set to play in the other Group D game Wednesday night.
While Ghana face Cameroon in their next game on Sunday, Cape Verde will play Mali before the teams swap opponents in their final group games on Thursday, August 6.
