One of the pupils injured in the road crash involving a school bus and a tipper truck on the Accra Mall–Dzorwulu stretch of the N1 Highway has died.
The Headmaster of Ask God Preparatory School, Eyi Banful, confirmed the death to TV3 on Thursday night during an interview on Ghana Tonight.
“I have just been to the 37 Hospital and those there are responding to treatment. I just had news from one of the parents that I have lost a student at the Police Hospital,” he said.
Mr. Banful disclosed that while some of the injured pupils who were admitted to the University of Ghana Hospital, Legon, have been treated and discharged, others remain on admission and are receiving medical care.
Contrary to earlier reports that the number of children involved were 11, the Headmaster confirmed that there were about 45 to 50 pupils involved.
“The children in the bus were more than 11. They were about 45 to 50,” he stated.
The children had closed from school and were heading to their various destinations when the unfortunate incident occurred.
The accident occurred at about 2:00 p.m. when a tipper truck with registration number GN 9673-25 rammed into a Sprinter Benz school bus with registration number GT 5717 – 14 belonging to Ask God Preparatory School, located in Ashaiman.
Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) and the National Ambulance Service responded promptly to the scene, rescuing victims from the wreckage before transporting them to various hospitals for treatment.
The circumstances surrounding the crash are under investigation.
