The Ofankor South Assemblyman, Dennis Daniel Quarshie, has revealed that the Ofankor Barrier on the Accra – Kumasi Highway records an accident almost every month.
He says drivers who use the stretch usually don’t take their time and speed unnecessarily, leading to frequent crashes on the route.
Mr. Quarshie, giving a blow-by-blow account of how the accident occurred with TV3’s Roland Walker on Thursday morning, August 13, 2026, indicated that the assembly is contemplating having some speed ramps on the highway due to the number of accidents that occur on the boulevard.
“Almost every month there will be an accident,” he told Roland Walker.
“So, we are even contemplating whether there should be a ramp or something to slow them down,” he added.
He explained that when motorists are “descending, they speed as if” there is nothing at stake. He advised that the accidents can be minimised or totally eradicated when drivers drive cautiously, despite the lack of ramps.
Most of the people who died in the crash, the Assemblyman revealed, were market women who were conveying their wares to the market.
So far, 11 people have died from the accident. ADO1 Alex King Nartey of the Public Relations Unit of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) had earlier confirmed 10 fatalities to TV3 on the NewDay morning show, with 7 others unconscious.
King Nartey had also indicated that one survivor, a girl below 15 years, has had both of her legs severely severed.
Meanwhile, the GNFS has now cleared the road to allow free flow of traffic on the stretch.
