The La McDan Park was full of action over the weekend as the final zonal matches of the Onua-Atena Community League were cleared on Saturday, paving way for the quarter-final stage the following day.
Gigolo Stars and Kotobabi Ebony Airforce 11 opened the action in Zone D in a goalless draw. The resultant penalties saw the men from Kotobabi win 2-1 over an exciting opponent, whose fans stopped at nothing to cheer their players on throughout the game.
The second game recorded the first open goal of the day with Taifa Slavation FC pipping Agbogba Suncity to set up a clash with Airforce 11.
The third game in the Zone recorded three goals as Nima came from a 1-0 down to beat La Paz West Ham FC 2-1.
A feisty display by Addobetor Warriors saw them secure a win over Auntie Aku Monday Stars by a lone goal, completing the preliminary round of Zone D.
The second round gave spectators at the La McDan Park a lot to be excited about as the matches saw skillful display of talents by players.
Kotobabi Ebony and Taifa Salvation FC shared the spoils in a pulsating 1-1 draw but the latter scored all five of their penalty kicks to beat the former 5-4.
They, thus, secured one of the two tickets to the quarter-final stage.
A beautifully-effected freekick in the dying embers of their game against Addobetor Warriors saw Nima pick the other ticket to the quarter finals.
Quarter finals
A quick draw was held immediately after the day’s games for the quarter-final fixtures.
Head of Sports for Onua Group Emmanuel Kwame Amoh explained the process to all present, indicating that teams from the same zone will be separated in order to clash at the earliest in the semi-finals.
After the draw, Zone D side Taifa Salvation FC were paired against Zone A side Lashibi Community 17, Ashongman Ashville FC got La Coastal United, champions Ashaiman Revelations got Aworshia Movement (Anglican FC) and Labone Heroes got Nima.
Fatigue may have set in for Taifa Sal FC as hey went 0-2 down to Lashibi Comm. 17 in the first clash on Sunday.
Ashville FC may also have rested enough, beating La Coastal Utd 2-1 on penalties after the two sides played a goalless draw in full regulation time.
Controversy set it ahead of the Ashaiman Revelations-Aworshia Movement (Anglican FC) clash as the late arrival of the boys from Ashaiman caused Teshie boys to refuse to play.
After a hold-up for more than an hour, organisers called the game off, disqualifying both teams.
A decision was announced by Mr Amoh for the best loser in the quarter-finals to join the winner of the Nima-Labone Heroes game in the semi-finals.
With the match ending goalless but won by Nima on penalties, La Coastal Utd and Labone Heroes were called onto the pitch for a play-off.
The Heroes emerged triumphant, joining Lashibi Comm. 17, Ashville FC and Nima in the semi-finals.
A draw is expected to be held on Wednesday for the semi-final games.
