New Patriotic Party (NPP) General Secretary aspirant, Eugene Yaw Boakye Antwi, has mounted a strong defense for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, describing him as the party’s best material for the 2028 elections.
According to him, Bawumia cannot be blamed for the NPP’s humiliating defeat in 2024 because the party structure was weak.
Speaking on Onua TV’s morning show, Maakye, on Monday, August 31, 2026, the former Subin Member of Parliament said a party cannot win an election with a strong candidate if the party’s structures are weak.
“When you have a strong candidate and a weak party, you cannot win an election,” he stated, stressing that Bawumia remains the party’s best bet for 2028.
“Bawumia is our best material but the party was weak so even if we had brought [Barack] Obama, we would have lost the election,” he stated.
He said it is obvious the work of the current party executives was abysmal, referencing comments by the party’s Acting Chairman, Danquah Smith Butey, who has called for the entire leadership to be ousted.
“It is obvious their work was abysmal and acting Chairman Butey says they all should go,” he added.
Mr. Boakye Antwi is eyeing the NPP General Secretary position as the party rebuilds for 2028. He declared his intention to contest the General Secretary position of the NPP as it prepares for its national executive elections on Saturday, October 3, 2026.
