Former Member of Parliament for Subin, Eugene Yaw Boakye Antwi, has downplayed suggestions of a fierce contest between himself and the incumbent General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong.
He says the contest does not appear to be a straight fight as being portrayed, insisting that on the grounds, there is nothing to show that his opponent is even in the race.
Mr Boakye Antwi made the comments when he appeared on Onua TV’s morning show, Maakye, on Monday, August 31, 2026, where he responded to a question on whether the upcoming general secretary race should be seen as a straight fight between him and Mr Kodua.
“I don’t see it as a fight. You see it that way. On the grounds, nothing even shows he is even in the race. You people make the thing look that scary,” he said.
According to him, the performance of the incumbent has been substandard and has contributed to the party’s current challenges, particularly the reduced numbers in Parliament.
He said the New Patriotic Party lost significant parliamentary seats under the current leadership, a situation he described as unacceptable for a General Secretary whose core mandate is to win parliamentary seats.
“His performance is substandard. The delegates know the one who can deliver power for this party,” Mr Boakye Antwi added.
He argued that from 2000, the NPP has always secured at least 100 seats to hold government in check, but the current numbers are inadequate and cannot be used to challenge critical decisions in Parliament, including the recent approval of Supreme Court justices.
The former Subin lawmaker said party faithful must focus on electing a General Secretary who can deliver parliamentary seats, explaining that Jubilee House becomes a bonus when the party wins more parliamentary seats.
Mr. Boakye Antwi is eyeing the NPP General Secretary position as the party rebuilds for 2028. He declared his intention to contest the General Secretary position of the NPP as it prepares for its national executive elections on Saturday, October 3, 2026.

Born on May 7, 1970 at Baman Kwabre in the Ashanti region, Bokye Antwi is a banker and businessman cum politician.
He holds a Higher National Diploma from Westminster College, UK, a BA in Business Administration and a PGDIP in Market Research from the University of Westminster.
He worked with Barclays Bank, now ABSA, from 1999 to 2002, served as Administrator at the UK’s Lord Chancellor’s Department from 2002 to 2006, and was Director of EUGASS Limited from 2006 to 2016.
Politically, he rose through the NPP UK and Ireland branch before winning the Subin seat, which he held from 2017 to 2025. He also served as Deputy Minister of Works and Housing.
He is campaigning on a five-point UNITE agenda – Unite the party, Nurture the grassroots, Improve discipline and internal efficiency, Transform engagement and rebuild trust, and Execute a winning strategy for 2028. His mantra on the campaign trail has been “No discipline, No power.”
