Deputy Ranking Member on Parliament’s Energy Committee, Collins Adomako has called on government to consider reducing taxes, tariffs and levies on petroleum products to cushion Ghanaians against rising fuel prices.
He said the current global challenges affecting oil prices require government to take stronger measures to ease the burden on consumers.
Speaking on TV3’S Daily Brief, Tuesday, September 1, he noted that previous interventions by government have not been sufficient, particularly because some were implemented for only a month.
“Our contention is that at this particular time where we are facing global challenges with our oil prices, it is just fair that government thinks deep and looks at slowing down on some of these tariffs and levies to cushion Ghanaians,” he said.
Mr Adomako acknowledged that government had intervened to provide some relief in recent months but argued that the short-term nature of the interventions was not adequately addressing the situation.
“I reckon they did something some few months ago and then subsequently they did last month for just one month. Clearly, the one-month interval is not helping out,” he stated.
He therefore urged government to go beyond temporary interventions and consider reducing some of the taxes and levies imposed on petroleum products.
“I think government must do more by reducing some of the tariffs and levies on petroleum products,” he added.
