The Minority in Parliament is demanding a load-shedding timetable from the government, saying that will help citizens to properly plan their daily activities in the midst of the ongoing power outages.

The call comes on the back of the recent power outages that has affected the entire country, with citizens trooping to social media with series of intermittent power supply complaints.

Meanwhile, the Energy Ministry had earlier indicated that the outages resulted from a transformer upgrade across several parts of the country, exacerbated by a fire outbreak at one of GRIDCo’s Substations at Akosombo.

The fire outbreak worsened the already existing power outages with several parts of the country plunged into darkness for some days now.

Speaking to the media in Parliament on Monday, April 27, 2026, the Deputy Ranking Member on Parliament’s Mines and Energy Committee, Collins Adomako-Mensah, said although the fire incident at Akosombo is unfortunate, the outages were already ongoing before the GRIDCo Substation inferno.

He admonished the government to accept the challenge and provide a schedule for people to plan their lives.

“What has happened in Akosombo is very unfortunate,” he stated.

“That would also mean that government must come clear and accept that there are challenges and get us a timetable so everybody will be comfortable,” he added.

He cited some comments by key members in the NDC when they were in opposition, saying their downplaying of the issue is making people accept the sector’s current challenges.

“I remember when Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh said he was doing ‘dumsiesie’ and that some of the wires (cables) needed to be changed, they did not take it lightly. They did not understand why that should lead to some power outages. Mr. Asiedu Nketia, the National Chairman of the party said ‘if you’re repairing a transformer on the right, why should left go off?’. That’s how low they trivialised the situation. Today, there are genuine reasons, genuine concerns but people are finding it very difficult to accept,” he stated.

Meanwhile, government has set up a committee to probe the fire incident at Akosombo, reports of which is expected within two weeks.
