The Minister for Energy, John Abdulai Jinapor, has described Thursday’s fire outbreak at the Ghana Grid Company as “severe and disastrous,” raising concerns about infrastructure safety and power supply stability.
According to the Minister, a seven-member committee has been constituted to investigate the cause of the incident. The committee has been given a two-week deadline to complete its work and submit findings.
The fire, which occurred on Thursday, April 23, was reported at exactly 14:05 hours, according to the Ghana National Fire Service.
In response, firefighters from Akosombo, Akuse, Somanya, Kpong, and Peki fire stations were deployed to the scene. A total of 64 personnel, supported by three fire tenders, carried out a coordinated operation to contain the blaze.
Firefighters managed to confine the fire at 14:53 hours. It was brought under control at 18:51 hours and fully extinguished by 19:00 hours.
After inspecting the affected facility, Mr. Jinapor noted the extent of destruction and emphasized the unusual scale of the incident.
He explained that although minor explosions can sometimes occur in such installations, the magnitude of this particular fire was unprecedented.
He further charged the investigative committee to work diligently and ensure that the exact cause of the fire is established within the stipulated timeframe.
Despite the damage, the Minister assured the public that efforts are underway to restore electricity to affected communities.
He disclosed that technical experts have already been mobilized and are working to ensure power is restored within 24 hours.
Earlier, the Chief Fire Officer, Daniella Mawusi Ntow Sarpong, visited the scene to assess the situation and support ongoing response efforts.
Authorities say further updates will be provided as investigations progress.
