The Minority on the constitutional and legal affairs committee has demanded that the anti-LGBTQ bill must be passed under a certificate of urgency when Parliament resumes in May to make its implementation faster.

The Deputy Ranking Member on Parliament’s Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee, Alhassan Tampuli while giving his closing remarks on second day of a stakeholder engagement on  the bill, said the bill is fit to be passed under a certificate of urgency.

The MP for Gushegu noted that an urgency in passing the bill is necessary to bring finality to the long-standing debate about the bill among Ghanaians.

“We should ensure that this bill is passed under certificate of urgency and as a committee, we can make that determination.

“And this is one that is fit to be passed under certificate of urgency to bring finality to this matter that has being in the public domain for some time so that the same day, His Excellency the President will sign and give assent,” he stated.

But Chairman of the committee, Shaibu Mahama observed that whether the Bill passes early or not, President Mahama is on standby to assent to it.

He assured that the bill will be considered and assented to by President John Dramani Mahama.

“We are rest assured that this bill will be considered when we resume and so as to whether it is of certificate urgency or not, the important thing is not having a President who will refuse to assent to the bill.

“We have a President who will assent to it and that is what is important, it doesn’t matter what time it gets there,” he noted.

The Committee has concluded its two day stakeholder engagement on the bill and will now consider its first readiing once the House resumes sitting in May.
