Mahama Ayariga, the Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, has been cautioned by notorious fetish priest, Nana Kwaku Bonsam, not to continue with the National Cathedral project.
This comes after the Minister said he will support the completion of the project if President John Dramani Mahama backs it.
Appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Thursday, August 27, 2026, Mr Ayariga said there is nothing wrong with the idea of a National Cathedral, describing it as a “good idea that was badly executed.”
He also told the Christian Council of Ghana on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, that Christians in Ghana and abroad have the capacity to mobilise resources to complete the project if there is unity among the churches.
But speaking on Onua TV’s morning show, Maakye, with JB on Thursday, September 3, 2026, Nana Kwaku Bonsam said the Minister should retract his statement.
“The last time I heard the Minister of Local Government saying it is possible the National Cathedral would be completed [if the Christian body unite on completing it],” he said.
He questioned the Minister if he is aware the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) lost the last election as a result of the National Cathedral. “And he knows it was one of the reasons the NPP was voted against,” he added in Twi.
Kwaku Bonsam said he has a lot of respect for the Minister but he must not push for the continuation of the project, calling on the Government to prosecute those who embezzled funds through the project.
“I respect the Minister a lot but he should retract his words. Please, we should back down on the National Cathedral and arrest those who have squandered money in the name of the project,” he stated.
He, however, indicated that even if the project would be continued, it should be relocated to the Atwea Mountains and use the current site to build a hospital.
