The Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has said that the full funds for the Accra-Kumasi Expressway will be ready by the end of this year.
He said this could be the first time funds for a project of this scale have been fully secured before construction begins.
In a Facebook post, the Finance Minister said, “By the end of this year, the full funding for the transformational Accra-Kumasi Expressway will be ready.
“This could be the first time funds for a project of this scale have been fully secured before construction begins. For the avoidance of doubt, not a single pesewa will be borrowed for this project!”
His comments come at a time when the Ghana Armed Forces Engineers announced that they have cleared 170 kilometres of the 176-kilometre corridor earmarked for the proposed Accra–Kumasi Expressway, leaving six kilometres to be cleared.
The development marks significant progress in the preparatory phase of the major road project, with the military engineering team expected to complete the remaining stretch as it advances towards Sawua.
In a post on X on Thursday, September 3, the Ghana Armed Forces said the corridor-clearing exercise had reached its final stage and commended its engineers for their efforts in clearing the challenging terrain.
“The finish line is in sight. Out of 176 kilometres of challenging terrain, just 6 km remain!” the Ghana Armed Forces stated.
The latest update follows an earlier announcement in July that more than half of the expressway corridor had been cleared.
As of June 25, 2026, 89.5 kilometres, representing 50.9 per cent of the corridor, had been cleared. The entire exercise was initially scheduled to be completed within 20 weeks.
The corridor-clearing exercise is a key preparatory step for the Accra–Kumasi Expressway, creating the required right of way ahead of major construction works.
The proposed expressway is expected to improve connectivity between Accra and Kumasi, reduce travel time, ease congestion and facilitate the movement of people and goods.
