The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, says assessment and onboarding of beneficiaries towards the expansion of the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty programme (LEAP) have been completed.
Speaking at a community dialogue at Chorkor on September 8, she explained that funding is available, with eligible beneficiaries expected to begin receiving payments from September 14.
According to her, the programme is being expanded from 350,000 to 400,000 households nationwide.
She, however, acknowledged the delay in the rollout.
“There was a critical issue that came up during the onboarding in some of the very remote communities: the slow network or unavailable network. And so we had to look for a solution to mitigate that.”
She further noted that some members have graduated because the intervention has improved their situations, which will see them exiting.
“Some beneficiaries have seen improvement in their situation, so they are graduating. Others will also be put on other social protection interventions.”
The Minister also mentioned that while those who have not seen much improvement will stay on board, not all of them are going to benefit.
“In fact, about 60 to 70 per cent will go off. And then the rest will be added on to the new recipients or beneficiaries,” She noted.
