The Minority in Parliament has called for urgent action to resolve the ongoing strike by teacher unions over unpaid promotion-related allowances and arrears.
Teachers under the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG) have been on strike since September 25, 2026.
Addressing a press conference in Parliament on Tuesday, September 29, Ranking Member on Defence and Interior Committee, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour criticised government’s failure to resolve the impasse.
“We sympathise with our gallant teachers. We demand urgent action because no country can expect to produce a thoroughly educated and efficient population if it cannot first look after its teachers,” the Minority said.
The strike has disrupted teaching and learning in schools, with the unions demanding concrete action from government to address their outstanding concerns.
The Assin South MP noted that the teachers are protesting unpaid promotion-related allowances and arrears dating back to January, as well as an unfinished collective agreement and the non-implementation of the deprived area allowance.
According to the Minority, Monday’s engagement between the government and the unions produced no new resolution, while the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission is expected to meet the unions on October 6.
Meanhwile, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has been given a week deadline to submit outstanding input forms and other documentation required to process salaries for newly promoted teachers.
Head of Public Relations at GES, Daniel Fenyi, said the deadline was communicated after the Education Minister met representatives of the teacher unions on Monday, September 28, and assured them of government’s commitment to resolving concerns surrounding the promotion process.
According to him, the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department had stressed the importance of the input forms and other documentation like the promotion letters to complete processing of new salaries for promoted teachers.
“The Honourable Minister met them today (Monday, September 28) and gave them all the assurances. He also mentioned that in case of the insistence of some input forms and documentations, I think he gave us until 4pm on Monday, October 5 to provide the input forms and all other necessary documentation, i.e. the promotion letter,” Fenyi said in an interview on JoyNews, Monday, September 28.
