Founder and Leader of the United Party (UP), Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen, has indicated that something different will happen in the 2028 general elections.
He has attributed the outcome of the 2024 elections to a lack of choice by majority of the citizenry, saying the next election will present a viable option for Ghanaians to choose from.
According to him, the low voter turnout recorded in the last elections shows many Ghanaians are fed up with the NPP-NDC duopoly and are waiting for a new dispensation.
Mr. Kyerematen, in an interview with Accra-based Atinka TV on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, said the figures from the 2024 polls should not be underestimated by any political stakeholder.
“Ghanaians are very perceptive and strategic with their choice. You cannot underestimate the Ghanaian voter,” he stated, explaining that, in 2024, “18.7 million voters [registered]. But in the end, only 11.4 million voted,” indicating the fallout is an indication that many citizens are fed up with the two parties.
“Why didn’t they vote? We recorded one of the lowest voter turnout in the history of Ghana’s political elections. 2.1 million who vote for NPP said they won’t vote for either the NPP nor the NDC,” he explained.
Mr. Kyerematen is on a media tour across the country to present the UP’s message to Ghanaians ahead of the 2028 general elections.
He said at least six million Ghanaians were worried by the lack of choice, with more young voters to be added by 2028.
“So getting into 2028, the reason I’m saying something will happen is that you can see majority of Ghanaians didn’t have a choice. At least 6 million plus people have a worry from the statistics,” he stated.
The UP founder and leader expressed optimism that “by 2028, those at age 16 and 17 would be ready for voting and they are 2.5 million who will be coming into the voter population.” Do you think they are committed to either the NPP or NDC?” he quizzed.
Mr. Kyerematen said younger generations are looking for leadership that guarantees their future.
“The Gen Zs are looking for a new dispensation that will guarantee their future. After school there are no jobs so whoever will be able to demonstrate in your narrative that you can guarantee a future of hope for them, it wouldn’t be the NPP and NDC,” he added.
