Former Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sammy Crabbe, has announced a unity alliance with fellow National Chairmanship aspirant John Boadu, hours before voting at the party’s National Delegates Conference.

In a signed statement on official letterhead dated Saturday, October 3, 2026, Crabbe said the two are “jointly announcing an alliance for unity of purpose.”

“Together, our experience in party management and our programmes to unite and motivate the rank and file will move the party forward. With John as Chairman, we will institutionalise unity and discipline,” the statement said.

Crabbe, who had been contesting as “Sammy Crabbe for National Chairman 2026”, said he will work side-by-side with Boadu to implement their joint programmes.

“I will work side by side with him to see these programmes implemented, so that every member of our party feels heard, valued and motivated,” he stated.

In a direct appeal to his support base, Crabbe framed the move not as a withdrawal:

“To my supporters: a vote for John is a vote for me. This is not a stepping down. It is a stepping up. It is an alliance.” 5e9d

Background:

The announcement comes as the NPP holds its National Delegates Conference at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi to elect new national executives ahead of the 2028 general elections. More than 7,100 delegates are expected to vote across 31 polling centres. 5e9d

Four candidates were cleared for the chairmanship: John Boadu, Sammy Crabbe, former National Chairman Paul Afoko and former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko. Boadu had picked No.1 on the ballot during the September 9 balloting, while Crabbe picked No.2.

The move was first disclosed in a social media post by Boadu, who wrote: “Sammy Crabbe, an aspiring National Chairman of the NPP, has stepped down from the race and thrown his support behind John Boadu. Let’s win together!”

Crabbe’s statement however nuances that description, insisting it is an alliance, not a simple withdrawal.

The alliance also follows the endorsement of Boadu by the camp of former Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi), who withdrew from the race in August. Recent polls by Global InfoAnalytics and Prof. Smart Sarpong had put Boadu in a commanding lead with 46.5% among all respondents, ahead of Agyarko at 24.8%, Afoko at 9.1% and Crabbe at 5.5%.
