The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has directed the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department to prepare a supplementary payroll to facilitate the payment of 51,000 teachers whose data has been processed and validated.
The teachers are expected to receive their salaries by October 16, with the remaining affected teachers expected to be paid by the end of October.
The Minister disclosed this while engaging education stakeholders at Adukrom in the Eastern Region, as government works to resolve concerns surrounding the ongoing teachers’ strike.
He said discussions with the Controller and Accountant-General had reached an advanced stage, adding that the necessary instructions had been issued to expedite the payment process.
“With the teachers, we are almost there. Part of the reason I sat at the back was to engage the Controller and Accountant-General and to give him firm instructions, with the support of the Minister of Finance, that on or before 16th October, you must roll out a supplementary payroll to at least provide for the new salary grade of some 51,000 teachers whose data have been validated,” he said.
The Minister explained that the remaining teachers among the approximately 80,000 affected personnel would be included in the October payroll.
“Then the rest of it, out of the 80,000, will be carried into their October salaries,” he added.
The latest directive is expected to pave the way for the payment of the validated teachers and contribute to efforts to resolve the industrial action.
