The Assemblyman and youth of Sumburugu in the Upper East Region have taken to the streets to protest the deaths of two young men in a road accident on the Bolgatanga–Navrongo Highway on Sunday, October 25, 2026.
The demonstration was intended to draw attention to growing concerns about road safety along the highway. According to the protesters, these include the absence of speed bumps at critical sections and overspeeding by motorists.
Residents described the two deceased as energetic members of the community. Their deaths have sparked grief and renewed calls for urgent measures to prevent further loss of lives on the road.
The protesters are calling on the government, relevant road authorities and opinion leaders to intervene and address the safety concerns raised by the community.
They believe that installing appropriate speed-control measures, including speed bumps at identified high-risk areas, could help reduce excessive speeding and protect pedestrians and other road users.
The demonstration is also an appeal to authorities to prioritise the safety of residents and commuters who depend on the highway for their daily activities.
Residents are urging the relevant authorities to assess the road and take the necessary steps to improve safety before more lives are lost.
The community has called on the government as well as traditional, political and other opinion leaders to support efforts to find a lasting solution.
As the community mourns the two young men, residents hope their appeal will prompt swift action to make the Bolgatanga–Navrongo Highway safer for all road users.
The protesters insist that urgent attention to road safety is needed to prevent similar tragedies and spare other families the pain of losing loved ones.
