Former President, John Agyekum Kufuor, has said Ghana must build an economy that allows individuals to create wealth and keep the reward of their work.

He says government must not stifle initiative with excessive taxation, calling for a need to create the enabling environment that allows people to thrive in their businesses.

According to President Kufuor, Ghana needs to empower private enterprises while using the wealth created to fund quality education, healthcare and social protection.

“We tend to be open-minded and liberal, but that’s not how we’ve lived so far,” he said.

Responding to a question on his vision for Ghana in the next 50 years, the former President said Ghana has the natural resources and the human talent to prosper, but requires leadership that recognises the role of entrepreneurs.

“We shouldn’t stifle initiative with excessive taxation,” he stated.

He noted that when the private sector is allowed to mature, it attracts investments from within and outside and makes people happy to do business in the country.

“If we do that, allow the private sector to mature, to attract investments, both from within and from outside, the people are happy when they come here,” he noted.

He said the wealth generated must be used to ensure all children get quality education and to provide healthcare and a safety net for persons with disabilities and those without jobs.

“We must ensure that all the children of this land are given some of the finest education you can get anywhere,” he said on JoyNews on Wednesday, October 28, 2026.
