TV3 Upper West Regional Correspondent, Ibrahim Abubakari Wangara, has emerged as one of the biggest winners at the 2nd Upper West Regional Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Awards, clinching two prestigious awards for his outstanding contributions to journalism.
Wangara was adjudged the Best Road Safety Reporter and Best Science and Technology Reporter at the colourful ceremony held on Saturday, October 31, 2026, at the A&QS Grand View Hotel in the Upper West Regional Capital, Wa.
The double victory is a major recognition of his commitment to impactful and ethical journalism, particularly in reporting on issues that promote public safety, innovation, development and informed public discourse.
His latest achievements further consolidate his growing reputation as one of the youngest promising journalists in the Region, having consistently used his platform to spotlight critical development issues and amplify stories that matter to communities.
Wangara’s success at the second edition of the awards also builds on an impressive performance at the maiden edition, where he won Best Rural Reporter and Best Tourism Reporter of the Year.
The four awards across the two editions underscore his versatility and sustained commitment to excellence in diverse areas of journalism.
The 2026 awards attracted entries from journalists across the region, with more than 25 submissions assessed by a three-member committee comprising lecturers in journalism and communication.
The assessment focused on key professional standards, including compelling headlines, strong introductions, multiple sourcing, quality interviews, coherent presentation, factual accuracy, data references, language proficiency and balanced reporting.
Wangara was among seven journalists shortlisted for recognition in the competitive regional awards scheme, which seeks to celebrate professionalism, ethical journalism and excellence in media practice.
Other winners included Philip Tengzu of the Ghana News Agency, who won the Environmental Reporting, Education Reporting and the ultimate Regional Journalist of the Year awards.
Ayamga Bawa Fatawu was recognised for Domestic Tourism Reporting, while Kojo Baffour Donkor of the Daily Graphic won the Agriculture and Agribusiness Reporting category.
Other award recipients were Muniru Ibrahim of Radio Mak for Disability Reporting; Rafiq Nungor Adam of Channel 247 for Health Reporting; and Gladys Wien of Radio Upper West for Human Rights Reporting.
Yiri News was named Digital Media of the Year.
Held under the theme, “Upholding Media Excellence: Promoting Ethical Journalism, Accountability, and Regional Development,” the ceremony brought together journalists, media practitioners, stakeholders and other dignitaries to celebrate excellence and recognise the media’s contribution to regional development.
For Wangara, the double triumph represents more than personal recognition. It reinforces the importance of specialised reporting in drawing attention to critical societal issues, holding institutions accountable and contributing to the development of the Upper West Region and Ghana.
With four regional GJA awards to his credit across two consecutive editions, the TV3 correspondent continues to strengthen his footprint in the journalism profession.
