The National Democratic Congress (NDC) says it is targeting an improvement on its 2024 electoral performance as it reorganises its structures ahead of the 2028 general elections.

The party’s Acting Director of Elections, Mahdi Jibril, says the ongoing internal elections, including the upcoming regional polls, are part of a broader effort to strengthen the party and position it to secure more votes across the country.

He says the party’s ambition goes beyond retaining its existing electoral strongholds, with the focus on improving its performance wherever additional votes could contribute to victory.

“The focus is for us to win 2028 elections. And wherever the vote will come to make the winning possible, we work on it,” he said.

Mr Jibril said the party was also prioritising unity and improved performance, insisting that the internal reorganisation was designed to prepare its structures for the next general election.

“We want to work for the unity of the party in the region, and then good performance, improve from what we did in 2024 to 2028 elections. That’s the priority of the party,” he added.

He said the party was determined to improve even on the votes it secured in the 2024 elections.

However, the reorganisation has not been without challenges, with the party dealing with petitions, disqualifications and appeals arising from its constituency elections.

Mr Jibril disclosed that the party received 26 petitions and recorded about 22 disqualifications at the voting stage, although some of the decisions were subsequently overturned following appeals.

He said the party had dealt with the petitions and was working to resolve outstanding matters, including reruns and negotiations over some positions.

“After the elections, we have positions that are tied. We are resolving those ones. Reruns are ongoing. Some renegotiations are also ongoing. So that is what the party is doing,” he said.

The NDC is expected to elect its regional executives on November 14 and 15, as it continues the internal reorganisation process that will culminate in the election of national executives in December.
