The Member of Parliament for Atiwa East, Abena Osei Asare, has expressed disappointment and frustration with the government’s approach to tackling the illegal mining menace, also known as ‘galamsey’.

She made the expression during the debate on 2026 Budget in Parliament on Tuesday, November 18, 2025.

According to her, the government’s allocation for addressing the issue is woefully inadequate, considering the severity of the problem. She lamented that the government’s actions suggest a lack of seriousness in dealing with the menace.

“We need a Galamsey Emergency Programme,” she emphasised, drawing parallels between the situation and a battlefield. “This government is treating the menace as if we’re in the battlefield with plastic chairs,” she added, criticizing the government’s seemingly ineffective approach.

The MP’s sentiments have sparked renewed calls for decisive action against illegal mining, which has had devastating effects on Ghana’s environment, water bodies, and communities.
