The Project Manager of the Accra-Tema Motorway Project, Ing. Ben Sackey says the project remains on schedule for completion in August 2027 despite concerns over the pace of work.
According to him, the project had reached 53 per cent completion as of September 2026, with significant progress made on some of the major structural works.
Motorists using the busy corridor have had to contend with narrowed lanes, diversions and traffic delays as construction continues.
However, Ing. Sackey maintains that the project is not behind schedule and contractors are working to ensure the remaining works are completed within the stipulated timeframe.
“This project is expected to be completed by August 2027, and we are doing everything possible to ensure that, by the given timeframe, the motorway will be traffic-free. Most of the structural works that require significant time to complete are already about 60 to 70 per cent done,” he said.

Ing. Sackey also acknowledged the inconvenience the construction has caused motorists and pedestrians but said traffic management along the corridor has improved significantly compared with the early stages of the project.
“At the beginning of construction, there were several diversions along the motorway. Now, motorists can travel along the stretch with diversions mainly at the interchange sites. Traffic flow has improved steadily, and we are working to improve it further,” he stated.
He urged road users to continue to exercise patience as construction teams work to minimise disruptions while maintaining progress on the project.
Commissioned in 1964 and initially designed to serve for about 20 years, the Accra-Tema Motorway has remained one of Ghana’s most important transport corridors for more than five decades.

The ongoing reconstruction and expansion project is intended to improve the capacity of the motorway to meet current mobility, safety and trade demands.
When completed, the upgraded corridor is expected to ease congestion, improve journey reliability and provide safer and more efficient movement for motorists and pedestrians.
With more than half of the project completed, attention will now turn to the remaining works as contractors race towards the August 2027 deadline.
Project officials maintain that construction is progressing steadily and that the scheduled completion date remains achievable.
