The Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza has disclosed that all principal roads in Accra will undergo a facelift ahead of Ghana’s 70th anniversary celebrations next year.

Speaking during a courtesy call on the Ga Mantse, His Royal Majesty King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, Wednesday, October 7, 2026 he said President John Mahama has directed the Ministry of Roads and Highways to undertake the activity.

The directive is aimed at modernising key roads in the capital before March next year as the country prepares to mark 70 years since independence.

“Ghana will be 70 years next year. The president has directed that we do a facelift on principal roads in Accra before March next year,” Agbodza said.

He announced that  government also plans to dualise the road from Tema through Osu, with an extension towards the old Winneba road.

The Minister noted that the project is expected to help ease traffic on the Kasoa Road.

The Minister assured that the modernisation of Accra would take into account the city’s historical heritage.

“We are sensitive to our heritage as a people. We will not willingly or just carelessly destroy any place of historical importance to our city or to any part of our country,” he said.

He called for the support and cooperation of stakeholders to ensure that the development of the capital balances modern infrastructure with the preservation of historically significant sites.

“We need the support of you and all stakeholders so that we can do this together while modernizing the city but not losing our heritage,” he added.
