Three contractors have submitted a joint bid for the construction of the Volivo Bridge, a major infrastructure project expected to span the Volta River under the Eastern Corridor Road network.
The consortium, comprising JFE Engineering Corporation, Shimizu Corporation and Toa Corporation, is operating under the name JST Venture and has provided a bid security of US$2.3 million.
Speaking at a brief ceremony to open the bids, Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, expressed optimism that the evaluation process would be completed soon to allow construction to begin towards the end of 2026 or early 2027.
He said the project had faced delays despite an earlier bidding process conducted between 2015 and 2017, during which a contractor was selected.
According to him, the initial process collapsed, preventing the project from moving into the construction phase.
“This process started somewhere 2015-2017. A full bidding process was carried out. A contractor was actually selected but somehow, we couldn’t execute the project so the whole process fell apart,” he said.
Agbodza said collaboration with Japan and the project consultant had helped accelerate several processes, paving the way for the latest bidding exercise.
He expressed confidence that a contractor would be selected to undertake the project following the evaluation of the bids.
“On this day, the new bid for the Volivo Bridge over River Volta has been opened and God willing, we are going to be able to select the contractor that will start the work,” he added.
