Seven-time champions of the Africa Cup of Nations Egypt have been knocked out of the tournament.

They were knocked out on Sunday, January 28 by the Leopards of Democratic Republic of Congo.

It was a fierce encounter at the Laurent Poku Stadium in San Pédro, where the Round of 16 game ended 1-1 in full regulation time.

The Congolese scored first through Meschack Elia before Mostafa Mohamed equalised from the spot just before the break.

The match went into extra time and with no additional goals scored, it went into penalty shootouts.

The two-time champions emerged triumphant as they beat the Pharaohs 8-7 in the shootouts.

DR Congo will next face Guinea for a place in the semi-finals.
