The first ever Kumasi marathon, dubbed, Verna Marathon being championed by Akoma FM has officially been launched. 

The event is expected to attract over 3,000 athletes from the 16 regions across the country. 

The 21-kilometre race is set to take place on Saturday, October 1, 2022, and would see thousands of athletes from across Ghana compete for the ultimate prize.

The race is part of activities lined up by Akoma 87.9FM in Kumasi to promote public engagement.

The over 3,000 expected athletes include students from the 150 Senior High Schools in the Ashanti Region. 

The starting point is at the Kumasi City Mall through the roundabouts at Suame, Santasi and Ahodwo and end at the Kumasi City Mall.

The Regional station Manager, Mathias Owusu Asante, revealed the various packages for the winners and participants.

He revealed prizes among the ten top athletes in both Men and Women.

He stated that there would be certificates and medals for the athletes who would be able to finish the 21-kilometre race in both male and female categories.

”We are delighted to begin this Marathon, which is the first of its kind. We urge all to partake to make the race successful. We thank our sponsors for believing in our brand and we are hopeful of delivering a superb Marathon come 1st October,” he said.

The Ashanti Regional Public Relations Officer of the National Sports Authority, Patience Mensah, underscored the need for Ghanaians to exercise their bodies.

She expressed the importance of exercising sharing her expectation of number participation in the event.

”Report we are getting from health facilities is that we are not exercising. It is good for us as a country to create a time for us to exercise. All that we need to do is to take opportunity to be part of the Marathon,” she stressed.
