The Allied Health Professions Council has begun a clampdown on quacks in the health sector to safeguard and protect the interest of Ghanaians seeking healthcare.

This, according to the Council, was necessitated by the influx of uncertified persons rendering healthcare services in the country.

The worrying development is said to pose a threat to efforts to extend access to quality healthcare delivery for all by 2030.

“The quack-elimination mission has started in Greater Accra and will be extended to all parts of the country to check the activities of quacks in the allied healthcare industry, who have invaded the health sector.”

Speaking at the 10th induction ceremony of fresh allied health graduates at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Acting Registrar of Allied Health Professions Council, Daniel Atta-Nyarko, said the elimination of quacks in the country will promote safety in the healthcare delivery system.

The Council also expressed concern over the mass exodus of trained health professionals from Ghana to developed countries.

“Quite a number of trained and experienced health professionals have left the country in search of greener pastures. This phenomenon, undoubtedly, is affecting health care delivery in the country. The large exodus of radiographers to the United Kingdom and other countries poses a serious challenge to our already fragile diagnostic services,” Atta-Nyarko indicated.

The Council wants the Ministry of Health to quickly address this challenge as the country strives to attain Universal Health Coverage by 2030.

“We agree that no developing country can match the attractive conditions of employment offered by the advanced countries, but some pragmatic interventions can be instituted to minimise the threat to our health sector,” he noted.

Whilst commending the government for the massive recruitment of allied health professionals in 2019, the Council says not much has been done in terms of recruitment after that year.

“I implore the government to take a critical look when it comes to granting clearance for allied health professionals to strengthen the health sector,” the Registrar pleaded.
