President of the Anglican Consultative Council, Most Rev. Rt. Hon. Justin Welby, has cautioned member churches of the Anglican Communion not to impose their will on other member churches.

He says resources of the church should also not be used in the officiating of marriages involving same sex couples, even though some churches, including those in the United States of America, Canada and the United Kingdom, have accepted the practice.

Ghana’s laws frown on same sex marriage amidst growing public discussions on the subject. Currently before Parliament is the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Family Values bill seeking to clearly define laws about LGBT activities and same sex marriage in Ghana.

Ahead of the 18th Anglican Consultative Council in Accra, President of the Anglican Consultative Council, Most Rev. Welby, who is also the Archbishop of Cantebury, stated the church of England’s General Synod has endorsed the decision by the Province’s College of Bishops not to change the doctrine on marriage.

Meanwhile, the global Anglican church has long been bitterly divided over sexuality and identity.

Churches in some countries have endorsed same-sex marriage and advocate inclusivity and equality, while others support criminalisation.
