Some three persons have been arrested for illegal hunting in the Ankasa Forest Reserve in the Elembelle municipality of the Western region.
The three persons who have been identified as Frank Odame, 36, a native of Assin Manso in the Central region; Abraham Kwasi Sikapa, 45, from Yilo Krobo in the Eastern region and George Avi, 48, from Akatsi in the Volta region, are currently facing prosecution for poaching.
The suspected poachers are facing prosecution after be ing arrested for illegal hunting in the Ankasa Conservation Area.
The arrest, made by five vigilant Resource Guards stationed at the Dadwen Range Camp, is being hailed in the fight against wildlife.
During the arrest, the team retrieved 3 unlicensed locally manufactured shotguns, 18 live cartridges, 7 flashlights and cutlasses.
Park Manager at the Reserve, Bona Kyiri, tells OnuaOnline in a telephone interview Wednesday, July 23, that the trio was sent to the Half Assini Municipal Magistrate Court on July 17, and have been granted bail to reappear on August 21, 2025.
He also disclosed that the accused persons attempted bribing the wildlife officers with GH¢7,000.00 to delay the prosecution, but were taken and presented to the police, together with other items that were recovered from them.
Meanwhile, Mr. Kyiri called on the public to assist the Forestry Commission and other stakeholders to preserve Ghana’s wildlife, announcing that they will be embarking on the closed-season for entry into forest reserves for hunting between August 1 and December 1, 2025.
According to him, the public is permitted to hunt for only grasscutter, but with a license from the Wildlife Division of the Forestry Commission.
