The Ghana National Council of Private Schools (GNACOPS) wants a minister appointed to manage private schools in the country.

Executive Director of GNACOPS, Enoch Kwesi Gyatuah made the plea during the Education Leadership and Common Core training seminar for private school managers on Wednesday, January 11, 2022, in Kumasi.

According to him, appointing a minister to man the private education sector will bridge the gap between government and private schools and help rectify challenges crippling the administration of private education.

“The private education sector employs 300,000 teachers so it is time for the government to reconsider appointing a deputy minister designated for private education so that matters concerning private education can easily be resolved. This will enhance coordination between the government and private schools and enhance productivity in the private educational sector,” he said.

A supervisor at the seminar and Head of Department, Education administration and Management at the University of Education, Winneba, Prof. Henne Kusi underscored the need for the training seminar.

“We took them through school governance, educational and curriculum management. There are some unethical acts and policies by some managers and school staff but with the training given, it is expected that they eshew such acts. The managers and school owners should be able to work with staff and non-teaching staff, parents and other government officials,” he was hopeful.

Benedicta Boakye, a participant at the seminar shared her experience saying “as school owners, we have been taken through how to handle our pupils, how to enhance a cordial relationship with colleagues and parents. We have also been taken through the legalities and illegalities in school management and administration.”
