Argentina came from behind to beat England 2-1 in a dramatic World Cup semi-final in Atlanta on Wednesday, booking their place in Sunday’s final against Spain as they chase back-to-back titles.
England took the lead in the 55th minute when Anthony Gordon tapped home a cross from Morgan Rogers to put the Three Lions in front.
For long spells it looked like Jordan Pickford’s heroics in goal would be enough to see England through, with the goalkeeper pulling off several crucial saves to keep Argentina at bay.
But Lionel Messi’s side refused to relent. Enzo Fernández levelled matters in the 85th minute with a long-range strike from a Messi assist, before Lautaro MartÃnez completed the turnaround deep into stoppage time, heading home another pinpoint delivery from the Argentine captain to make it 2-1.
It was the fourth straight knockout match in which Argentina have been made to fight, following extra-time battles with Cape Verde and Switzerland and a stunning comeback from 2-0 down against Egypt.
Wednesday’s win extends England’s wait for a first World Cup title since 1966 to 60 years.
Argentina will now face Spain in Sunday’s final at the New York New Jersey Stadium, New Jersey, as they bid to defend the title they won in Qatar in 2022.
