Management of Ghana Premier League giants Asante Kotoko has announced the resumption of training of the senior team from Wednesday, February 19 “to ensure the physical and mental well-being of our players”.
According to a release by the club, this decision is in no way altering an earlier stance not to participate in any football+related activity until justice over the murder of ardent fan Francis Yaw Frimpong, popularly known as Nana Pooley, is served.
“Our position remains unchanged; we will not compete in any official matches until meaningful and decisive actions are taken to secure justice and protect the future of our game.”
The club says it remains deeply pained by the “tragic and senseless” events that led to Nana Pooley’s death. The bubbly fan was stabbed to death after Asante Kotoko’s 1-0 loss to Nsoatreman FC on Matchday 19 of the 2024/25 League.
“The wounds from that dark day have not healed, and our resolve for justice remains as strong as ever.”
The club says meetings so far with the Sports and Recreation Minister, the Interior Minister and the Inspector General of Police have provided some reassurance that justice will be served.
But the decision to resume training was after careful consideration and consultation with the medical department.
“While the pain of recent events still lingers, we recognize the need to maintain the fitness and sharpness of our squad as we continue to demand accountability for the heinous acts committed against our club and our supporters.”
