The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs has announced the payment of monthly allowances to Assembly Members across the country.
The amount totals up to GHC23,621,000 for the months of April and May.
The announcement was made by Minister Ahmed Ibrahim during a press conference held on Monday, July 14, 2025. He confirmed that 9,085 Assembly Members will each receive GHC1,300 per month, in line with their active roles and responsibilities within their electoral areas.
“Each Assembly Member is being paid one thousand, three hundred Ghana Cedis (GH₵1,300.00) per month,” he said.
The disbursement fulfills President John Mahama’s pledge to equip Assembly Members with the necessary resources to operate effectively and ensure grassroots development.
“This is to equip them with financial resources and logistics to deepen monitoring of all government projects and programmes being implemented within their electoral areas,” the Minister stated.
Minister Ibrahim highlighted ongoing challenges with the re-centralisation of resources, which have historically hindered performance at the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs).
To remedy this, the government allocated GHC100 million in the 2025 Budget to the Ministry for operational support and logistics. The Ministry of Finance released GHC 25 million on June 18 as the first tranche of this commitment.
“As of today, July 14, the Ministry has transferred GHC 23.6 million to cover Assembly Member allowances for April and May. We remain committed to delivering efficient service and resource flow to strengthen the work of the MMDAs.”
Minister Ibrahim concluded with a renewed pledge to ensure timely and adequate funding, aimed at enhancing service delivery and deepening community engagement at the local level.
