Drivers under the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis and Jomoro Municipality have issued a warning to embark on a sit-down strike if the two assemblies- (Effia-Kwesimitsim Municipal Assembly and Jomoro Municipal Assembly) fail to remove unauthorized transport operators at Jubilee Park and the Elubo police station.
At a press conference by the aggrieved drivers led by the Western Regional GPRTU Chairman, Joseph Simmons Cudjoe, they described the activities at both Jubilee Park in Takoradi and Elubo Police station as hazardous and a threat to both public safety and their operations.
They noted that government has provided a designated terminal at Abenbebom (Apremdo Market) for all drivers operating within EKMA, yet some continue to operate illegally at Jubilee Park with no enforcement from EKMA.
“As we’ve stated clearly, if EKMA fails to remove the operators currently working illegally at Jubilee Park, we will advise ourselves. Let me set the records straight — claims that GPRTU members will also go and load at Jubilee Park are completely false. We are law-abiding drivers; we will not take the law into our own hands. Instead, we will embark on a peaceful sit-down strike,” he stated.
“The sit-down strike will involve all drivers operating from Agona Nkwanta, Kojokrom, Daboase, Sekondi, and Takoradi. No one will work. It will officially begin at 12:00 am on Monday, July 21, 2025. Starting today, red bands will be tied at all terminals and on every vehicle across the metropolis to show how angry and serious we are about this issue.” he revealed.
Western Regional GPRTU Chairman, Joseph Simmons Cudjoe, announced that red bands will be tied at all terminals across Sekondi-Takoradi ahead of the planned strike on Monday, July 21, 2025, at exactly 12:00 am. He added that if EKMA fails to act, the protest will escalate to the regional and national levels.
“If our sit-down strike at the district level does not yield any results from EKMA, we will escalate it to a regional sit-down strike, and if necessary, proceed to a nationwide action,” said Mr. Joseph Simmons Cudjoe, Western Regional GPRTU Chairman.
“The National Secretariat is fully aware of the situation here and is solidly behind us. They understand the challenges we are facing and are ready to support us every step of the way.”
The GPRTU is calling on the Western Regional Minister, the Ministry of Transport, and all relevant authorities to intervene immediately and vacate drivers operating at the Jubilee Park area.
