Dr. Bryan Abbey Acheampong, the MP for Abetifi and an NPP 2028 flag bearer hopeful, has attributed the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections to the candidature of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

He says Dr. Bawumia became a victim of tribal circumstances, which affected the party in the last elections.

The former Minister of National Security, speaking to some party members on Saturday, August 23, 2025, noted that the party’s selection of Dr. Bawumia as its candidate alienated sections of the northern Ghana electorates, which adversely impacted the party’s fortunes.

According to him, the northern constituencies were previously won by former Presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and William Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, unlike the 2024 race, which was undermined by historical tribal rivalries.

“President Kufuor won all NPP votes in Kusasi and President Akufo-Addo also did the same thing, but because the fight is between two tribes (Mamprusis and Kusasis) and we elected a flag bearer from one of them, we lost from Oti Region, Upper East, Upper West and the Northern Region,” Dr. Acheampong stated.

He stated that Dr. Bawumia lost the poll not because he was a poor candidate, but rather, a tribal wind that was brewing at the time.

“We lost all our seats because of the candidate we presented [Dr Mahamudu Bawumia], and he could be a victim of circumstance and not his fault, but the timing didn’t favour him,” he stated.

Dr Bawumia, who served as Ghana’s Vice President from 2017 to 2025, was the NPP’s flag bearer in the 2024 general elections.

Dr Acheampong, who is currently in the race to lead the NPP into the 2028 elections, maintained that the party must take lessons from the 2024 outcome.

He called on members to be strategic in their decision-making to ensure that the party presents a candidate capable of uniting its base and reclaiming power from the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
