The campaign team of Dr. Bryan Acheampong, a 2028 flag bearer hopeful of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), has debunked claims suggesting the former Minister is blaming Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for the ensuing Bawku conflict.
The team, in a statement issued on Sunday, August 24, 2025, has refuted a viral video on social media suggesting Dr. Acheampong has blamed the former Vice President for the conflict between the Kusasi and Mamprusi.
“Dr. Acheampong has not, at any point, blamed former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for the Kusasi-Mamprusi conflict,” portions of the statement read.
It further clarified that the video suggesting Dr. Acheampong attributed the fracas to Dr. Bawumia is “mischievously edited” to create disaffection, explaining that the flag bearer hopeful only described his contender as a “victim of circumstances.”
According to the statement, Dr. Acheampong’s comments referenced a deliberate political strategy employed and exploited to weaken the NPP’s performance in key regions and constituencies, something the team believes should be of concern to the party going forward, considering the fact that the remarks are matters of public record.
The statement further highlighted Dr. Acheampong’s respect for the former Vice President, saying his remarks should not be taken out of context.
It stressed that the former Minister of National Security’s comments are hinged on unity and pushing for a candidate that will help the party clinch victory in the next election.
“Dr Acheampong’s message is not about division,” the campaign insisted. “It is about rallying the NPP around a winning strategy and candidate. His campaign is anchored on unity, transparency, and results.”
The campaign team urged party members and the general public to disregard sensationalised clips and instead listen to the full recording of Dr Acheampong’s comments before making any conclusions.
