The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has asked Ghanaians to blame Parliament if the country’s democracy is weak.

According to Speaker Bagbin, the call for impeachment of unperforming cabinet members dwell massively on the legislature notwithstanding the loudness of the public and the media.

The conversation comes on the back of calls for the removal of Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta and his deputy from office, including President Akufo-Addo himself for nonperformance.

Addressing the media in Parliament, Speaker Bagbin noted Parliament is the only institution that can take an action against the President, to give life to the country’s democracy.

“As you sit here, your rights, if anybody is violating your rights and no action is being taken, blame the Members of Parliament and Parliament as an institution. But they are the defenders of the rights of all the people, all the classes of people. They are the only people that can take disciplinary action against the President, nobody else.

“And that is why we have that power to do what, to impeach a President. It is only Parliament. Civil society will come out and talk, the media will give the exposures and all those things but the action to be taken rests with the people’s representatives .

“And so if democracy is weak and is not functioning well, it is because Parliament itself is weak and is not functioning properly,” Mr. Bagbin indicated.
