President John Dramani Mahama has nominated the Member of Parliament for Buem Constituency, Kofi Iddie Adams, as the Minister of Sports and Recreation.

The minister-designate was part of the third batch of ministerial appointments announced by the President on Tuesday, January 21.

Kofi Adams is not a known face in the sporting fraternity, having served as a Spokesperson of the Rawlingses before becoming a Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), a position he was later suspended from.

He, however, beat Yaw Boateng Gyan in 2014 to become the National Organiser of the ruling party.

In a recent interview, however, Kofi Adams is quoted as expressing a love for boxing, vowing to take sports back to the grassroots.

“I love boxing,” he told Accra-based television station GHOne.

“I will gladly accept the Sports Minister position if appointed. Let’s return to grassroots sports and implement it effectively.”

His role is cut out as he will be the first minister in the Fourth Republic to handle a sector dedicated to sports and recreation. The sector has predominantly been paired with youth.

Kofi Adams is expected to be vetted in February.
